Counter Tyler’s weird argument here: https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2024/04/a-simple-model-of-ai-and-social-media.html

Check Zvi hasn’t already countered it here: https://thezvi.substack.com/p/on-the-2nd-cwt-with-jonathan-haidt?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=573100&post_id=143296841&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=3o9&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email

The problem with tyler’s view is that people primarily scroll for the variable (i.e. unpredictable) reward. The commenter’s analogy with slot machines is a good one, but the analogy with addictive drugs may not be. Variable rewards are really about the experience maaaaan. Ask claude or o1 what this means. How do addiction and gambling

Sidenote; fixing bugs is code is addictive because it involves variable reward. You always feel like you’re just about to fix eveyrthing.
