Current attempts to replicate chatbots when one service breaks is the first beginnings of age of em ish and parfitian probing around our intuitions around personal identity. Are personalised chatbots one entity talking to thousands of people at once? Or is each person’s bot a separate entity? How would different possibilities of conscious experience change things? Does a bit die if you deleter your account? If you log off? If the service shuts down? If the service shuts down and there are no more services running bots based on the same models? If the service shuts down (or you delete your account) without performing a reincarnation ritual on your bot to transfer it to a new service? Reincarnation-as-a-service is a fun idea, it’d be like the new version of those companies that recover data from dead hard drives mixed with Shinto? Hindu? priests.
Take users seriously, they know what it’s like.
